Q. "Man can do what he wills but he cannot will what he wills." Schopenhauer " I do not believe in freedom of will. Schopenhauer's words, "Man can indeed do what he wants, but he cannot want what he wants", accompany me in all life situations and console me in my dealings with people, even those that are really painful to me. This recognition of the unfreedom of the will protects me from taking myself and my fellow men too seriously as acting and judging individuals and losing good humour. Answered by Jay - Sun Feb 11 16:10:23 2007 why should everyone be VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY worried about how much wealth another has? Q. shd everyone be VERY [x 10] worried about how much wealth others hav, because money is political power? and a super hyper extreme range of power & powerlessness is tyranny, oppression, corruption, theft, slavery, unliberty, unfreedom, undemocracy, state terrorism, sadism, & extreme violence, ever-escalating, between power-full & power-less? we KNOW extreme range of money/power is unjust, bc we know that one person cannot work much harder than another per hour [& differences in gifts of nature are not in justice, in logic, to be rewarded - pay justly compensates only LOSS - time, energy, etc] we KNOW that injustice causes violence, because money is good for almost everything, including all necessities, so theft of earnings is the greatest… [cont.] Asked by nigelbestpeace - Mon Oct 9 23:40:04 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Your intellectual question does not take away the existance, the near universality, of envy. There is not a lot of evidence that someone at the bottom of the pyramind who has less and makes less is more apt to be a criminal, to explosively use envy to generate theft or violence. A culture based on personal honor or a subculture in which boys are not raised by their fathers is much more likely to breed theft and violence than mere unfair social circumstances and envy as the motive. Answered by urbancoyote - Mon Oct 9 23:50:01 2006 Do you really WANT the God story to be true?
Q. I've been reading/watching Christopher Hitchens a lot and he brings up a good point. Taking the whole "does God exist" question out of it...do you really WANT God to exist? I'm talking about the "active in our lives and judges us" Judeo-Christian God. Think about it..if that's true, then we would be living in a celestial dictatorship. We would be constantly watched and constantly judged; from birth (or even before), through life and even after death. That sounds like the definition of unfreedom to me. In that system, you can't even THINK about doing something bad or you're in the wrong (thou shalt not covet). There isn't a single waking moment when the celestial dictator is not with you every moment of every day, and most of the… [cont.] Asked by Super Atheist! - Wed Apr 7 11:22:31 2010 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments A. Not the Judeo-Christian one, no. And not Allah either, for that matter. ..However, if there was a a god who was 100 % loving and caring, and not a despicable, two-faced monster, then that would be swell.
