From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In biology, a species is one of the basic units of biological classification and a taxonomic rank. A species is often defined as a group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring. While in many cases this definition is adequate, more precise or differing measures are often used, such as similarity of DNA, morphology or ecological niche. Presence of specific locally adapted traits may further subdivide species into subspecies. The commonly used names for plant and animal taxa sometimes correspond to species: for example, "lion," "walrus," and "Camphor tree" – each refers to a species. In other cases common names do not: for example, "deer" refers to a family of 34 species, including Eld's Deer, Red Deer and Elk (Wapiti). The last two species were once considered a single species, illustrating how species boundaries may change with increased scientific knowledge. Each species is placed within a single genus. This is a hypothesis that the species is more closely related to other species within its genus than to species of other genera. All species are given a binomial name consisting of the generic name and specific name (or specific epithet). For example, Boa constrictor, which is commonly called by its bionomial name, and is one of five species of the Boa genus. A usable definition of the word "species" and reliable methods of identifying particular species are essential for stating and testing biological theories and for measuring biodiversity. Traditionally, multiple examples of a proposed species must be studied for unifying characters before it can be regarded as a species. Extinct species known only from fossils are generally difficult to give precise taxonomic rankings to. Because of the difficulties with both defining and tallying the total numbers of different species in the world, it is estimated that there are anywhere between 2 and 100 million different species. GNU Free Documentation License How many introduced plant species are there in the United States? Q. My imformation indicates there are 17,000 native plant species in the U.S. I'd like to add the number of introduced plant species to reach a grand total of plant species in just the US. Actually lets not count weeds. Just trees and perennials, bushes, stuff people plant and garden. Is this website a reputable source? It says there that there are 4,000 introduced species in the US which would make the grand total about 21,000 right? Asked by Professor Armitage - Tue Jun 27 03:15:20 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are quite a few... Most of them European, Asian, and South American, and almost all of them are weeds. Dandelions are introduced, but that's just one of hundreds. Answered by Jackson V - Tue Jun 27 12:15:48 2006 Which species of fish go well with neon tetras and live with them in the wild? Q. So if you google "Amazon Biotype aquarium" there are many sites with great info. Personally, I recommend plecos. Btw, the bathtub is a great idea! Q. Crotalus horridus atricaudatus is an invalid sub species of Crotalus horridus, why? What information suggests that its the same, I already know how they differ, tell me what info makes them the same species, and not a sub species. Asked by Russell F - Fri Feb 1 17:44:53 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm not sure what you are getting at. A species is divided into subspecies when there are geographical divisions that result in generally-distinguishable groups. For example, the eastern midland, southern, and western painted turtles. They are all the same species, just different subspecies. Where you find different color-phases, sometimes within the same brood, you do not have geographic variation and, thus, no subspecies.
