Q. I wasn't a idiot but it was someone close to me, and they're going to pay the taxes on the money they pulled out of the stock market which was eventually lost to Nigerian scammers. I'm gonna be honest with you guys, they've lost a million to these scum bags over a three year period. The FBI would not help my parents at all and my mom just wouldnt listen to anyone.

A. How much did they lose? Did they file a police report? Did they contact anyone else? Here's the hassle: Thefts go first to form 4684. Reduce by $100 and subtract out 10% of his AGI. Then the money that's remaining goes to schedule A. If the total for schedule A is more than their standard deduction, then and only then would the get a tax break. You CAN'T put the loss on the schedule D. *sigh* The million would survive to the schedule A, wipe out current income and create a net operating loss. The NOL would then carry back 2 years (no, just checked, theft losses get a 3-year carryback) and forward 20 years or until they die. The NOL effectively cancels out the income tax on the million. Lose $1M, paid, say, $250,000 in tax on… [cont.]
