A. some leagues have a bonus or kicker for achieveing extraordinary results... like Passing for over 300 yds, rushing for over 200 yds... etc...if your player hits that you get bonus points on top of yardage/td points...

Do bonus checks at work have to be taxed in California?
Q. We give out bonus checks around Christmas every year, but someone just told me that we are supposed to report it to our payroll service and the amount is supposed to be taxed. Does anyone know if this is true?
Asked by PaganBeauty - Thu Dec 13 14:33:18 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, yes, yes. It's money, it's compensation, it gets taxed like everything else. Fica/MC and Federal/State taxes. The Federal/State taxes may be at a flat percentage (say 25% for federal).

I'm due to receive a bonus in July. How can I calculate how much taxes will be taken out?
Q. I'm due to receive a bonus in July. How can I calculate how much taxes will be taken out? I live in california. I'm using excel, and am keeping a running total of what my bonus will be. How can I show what it will be after taxes?? If the bonus will put me at a little under 5000, then what bracket will I be at?
Asked by mamba - Fri Dec 28 16:32:38 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In terms of a paycheck, they will probably withhold 25% for federal (I'm not in California so I don't know the state amount, but I've seen references to 9.3%). This is a flat amount allowed by the IRS. You will also get hit with 7.65% fica/mc. The problem though, is that your bonus isn't an isolated event on your tax return. Your bonus is part of your total income. If your tax bracket for additional money is less than 25%, you'll get a bigger refund at tax time; if your tax bracket for additional money is more than 25%, you'll owe. Get 1040ES from IRS.gov. The 2007 numbers are close enough. Set up your speadsheet like I did with fields for the income items you normally have. Then have a YTD column and a rest-of-year estimate… [cont.]

How much should a Christmas bonus usually be percentage wise?
Q. Employers usually give some kind of bonus around the holidays if the company is doing well, approx what percentage is considered "standard?"
Asked by Katie - Tue Oct 2 10:05:07 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There isn't a standard. The last two employers I had, didn't do Christmas Bonus. The one before that, did $100 for every year of employment. Before that, it was a week's pay.

How should I handle having to repay a bonus for quitting before the stated term?
Q. I received a bonus in 2004 that stated I must stay with my employer until June 2006. I left in April 2006 and was required to repay the bonus. My W-2 from this employer shows only that I repaid the after-tax amount which does not include taxes; I think I should be able to claim the entire amount since I paid the taxes for 2004. Since this is from a prior year it's complicated. How should I handle this? Can this be treated as a penalty? Or does it simply reduce my income for the year?
Asked by Tony H - Fri Feb 2 11:42:40 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will need to file an amendment to your taxes for 2004. H&R Block, etc., will be able to help you with it. But surifing around at www.irs.gov can be a great way to either figure out how to handle the matter by yourself, or finally come to the realization that the government has been taken over by aliens.

If you get an enlistment bonus in the military, and then a year later get an other than honorable discharge?
Q. When this happenes, you are told you will be responsible for paying the bonus back. Future tax returns will be withheld until paid in full. Is this something that would be reported on your credit report? If so how would it report? Thanks for your help.
Asked by nadine - Sat Oct 6 08:36:24 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I've never seen anything like that report on a credit report, but then its a pretty unique circumstance, so perhaps it does and I've just never seen one in my years as a credit counselor. Regardless, when you owe the government money, they'll get it from you one way or another, so just prepare to pay it off, unless you plan to live overseas for the rest of your life.

Sometimes, after the games are over with, a player gets a star next to their points, with points added for like a tackle? When repaying a signing bonus, do you pay the net amount or the gross amount and receive a refund of taxes?
Q. I am planning to terminate my employment prior to vesting in a signing bonus and want to know exactly how much I will have to repay. Is it the gross amount of the bonus, or can I repay only the portion that I received and the employer can adjust their federal, state, and FICA withholdings.
Asked by justinm00 - Wed Jun 6 09:56:55 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You would repay the gross amount unless your employer allows you to pay less. Your employer has already sent in the income and payroll taxes to the IRS. You will have to recover those yourself. Assuming this bonus was paid to you in a prior year, you have a "claim of right" to the taxes you paid on that bonus. Get your tax return for the year you got the bonus, and re-do the return without the bonus. You will have taxes owed you. Don't forget to include excess SS and Medicare taxes you paid on the bonus as well as income taxes. Then if the refund due you is substantial, or you do not want to wait until 2008 to get this refund, file Form 1045 by itself and include the amount owed you on Line 28 (for 2006). This is the only line… [cont.]

What is the enlistment bonus for getting a 70 on the ASVAB?
Q. I scored a 70 on the ASVAB. What kind of enlistment bonus am I looking at if I joined the Infantry? Of course all the other possible bonus will add more on, but if I could just get an estimate that would be great.
Asked by Lunatic - Tue Jun 30 23:31:14 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. ASVAB score doesn't effect if you get a bonus or not. Your bonus is determined by MOS and years you sign up for. Bonuses are getting few and far between. If you are joining just for a bonus please don't join at all.

How much bonus does an investment banking analyst make ?
Q. I intend to go into finance/investment banking (after i graduate and hopefully the economy recovers) . How much salary+ bonus would a NEW investment banking analyst make at an i-bank such as goldman sachs or jp morgan. also, i intend to get a Masters in financial engineering after i graduate from college...is it even worth it? will it give me a better shot at a higher position at an investment bank or will i have to start at the same level as college graduates?
Asked by twstedlogic - Sun Mar 29 04:32:19 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. At that level, the bonus is not significant. To make the big dollars, you need to become a banker with close ties (i.e., give a lot of money) to the President, the Speaker, and various other corrupt politicians.

What would you do if your boss cut your Christmas bonus in half?
Q. My position with the company is Office Manager. I have gotten the same amount for a bonus the last 4 years. I understand that it's the employers choice to give a bonus or not. I am grateful for what I did get. To me cutting the bonus with no explaination tells me I have done a bad job this year. He also cut the other secretaries bonus. I know the company had an average year. I just don't understand.

A. I'd be happy to receive anything if I was you. Don't ask your boss. That is tacky, and shows ingratitude. He's not obligated to explain a bonus. Actually, he's not obligated to give you one at all. If it's a bonus cut across the board, then it's business-- and not a personal comment on how you performed. If you performed badly this year, you wouldn't have gotten any bonus.

How does bonus offense in Yahoo fantasy football work exactly?
Q. I'm the commish of a league and we want to use the new bonus offense feature that Yahoo offers. I want to make sure I have it right. My understanding is that if you use all 3 levels of bonus points, and a player reaches all 3 in one game, you get credit for all 3 levels, not just the third. For instance, if you set it up using 1 point for 100 yds, 2 for 150 yds, and 3 for 200 yds, and you have a RB who has 210 rushing yards in a game, you would get a total of 6 bonus points, not 3. Am I correct?

What is the quickest way to get my pokerstars bonus?
Q. I just deposited my second one hundred dollar deposit. The first one hundred i played too high of stakes and lost it over time. I have 170 points right now. What is the quickest way to earn my bonus?
Asked by d man - Wed Apr 22 17:14:12 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The quickest way to earn your points would be to play Heads Up poker. Obviously the higher the stakes the quicker you'll get it released but I really wouldn't recommend playing above what your bankroll can afford. Your bonus will come in time if you stick to it. Greed really is the death of many online poker players. I've listed an article below in the sources about online poker bankroll management which is worth a quick 5 minute read. I'll also throw up a decent article on good Heads Up poker strategy to try help you make sure that this deposit was your last one ;D But yeah to be dead pan and straight to the point of answering your question... Heads Up poker is what you want to be playing.

Q. Cash bonus for Christmas without taxes for them?
Asked by popydude13 - Wed Dec 12 15:30:58 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can't legally do that. If you want them to net a certain amount then you have the option of paying the taxes on their behalf and that is called a gross-up. Your payroll department will know how to do this. At least I would hope so because it is pretty common in payroll.

Why is my federal tax rate so much higher for bonus pay?
Q. Hi, I work in a job where I make bonus pay each month. I have a salary and then any hours over 150 each month is counted as bonus pay. I have noticed that my effective tax rate for regular pay is about 10% but about 25% for my bonus pay. Why is this? Is there something that I can change to reduce that rate?
Asked by dsjnix - Mon Jun 18 07:14:19 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. just means you'll be getting a fatter return when you file. Wages and bonuses are all taxed at the same rate, they probably just withhold more from your bonuses just to be safe. safe meaning if somehow these extra bonuses put u in the next higher marginal tax bracket, the amount they withhold will be sufficient enough to cover the amount due on tax day..
