What do the common equitation bits help with?
Q. I've just decided to start competing in equitation. I used to do jumpers, and i used a 3 ring elevator bit which worked out okay, but not great. The more common bits used in equitation rounds are the dee ring, eggbutt, full cheek, and pelham. What do each of these bits do and what will they help with in my ride?

A. Your elevator bit wouldn't be looked upon kindly, you're right. If you're riding the same horse, then you will have to look at something a bit more severe than the dee ring, eggbutt or full cheek snaffles, these are all "direct pull" bits with no leverage. A pelham will give you both the option of using more of the snaffle rein or the curb rein, your call but if you're not used to riding with double reins, this maybe more of a handicap than an advantage. I'd stay go with a kimberwick. This way you can have your leverage bit without having to use two reins. You can also choose the amount of leverage you want to use on your horse, a well as the mouth piece (Curb, jointed, etc.).
