Iraq (pronounced /ɪˈræk/ or /ɪˈrɑːk/, Arabic: العراق Al-Irāq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic: جمهورية العراق (help·info) Jumhūrīyat Al-Irāq, Kurdish: كماری عراق, Komara Îraqê, Assyrian: ܥܝܪܐܩ), also known as Mesopotamia, is a country in Western Asia spanning most of the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, the eastern part of the Syrian Desert and the northern part of the Arabian Desert. Iraq shares borders with Jordan to the west, Syria to the northwest, Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, and Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to the south. Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (35 miles) on the northern Persian Gulf. The capital city, Baghdad (Arabic: بغداد Baġdād), is in the center-east of the country. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run through the centre of Iraq, flowing from north to south. These provide Iraq with agriculturally capable land and contrast with the steppe and desert landscape that covers most of Western Asia. Historically, Iraq was known in Europe by the Greek exonym 'Mesopotamia' (Land between the rivers); after the foundation of the Kingdom of Iraq in 1932, it became known by its ancient endonym 'Iraq'. Iraq has been home to continuous successive civilizations since the 6th millennium BC. The region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers is identified as the cradle of civilization and the birthplace of writing and the wheel. Throughout its long history, Iraq has been the center of the Akkadian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Hellenistic, Parthian, Sassanid and Abbasid empires, and part of the Achaemenid, Roman, Rashidun, Umayyad, Mongol, Ottoman and British empires. Beginning with the invasion in 2003, a multinational coalition of forces, mainly American and British, occupied Iraq. The occupation ended when sovereignty was transferred to the Iraqi Interim Government June 2004. A new Constitution of Iraq has since been approved by referendum and a new Government of Iraq has been elected. Some dispute whether Iraq is de facto sovereign (see Iraqi sovereignty, United States-Iraq relations). From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do we know that Iraq supported the people who attacked us? Q. I've heard that it was faulty intelligence. Some people are saying straight out that the reason for this war was because Iraq was harboring terrorists or that the source of the attack was from terrorists in Iraq. However, this neglects what is known about Bush's reasons. Which was WMD and bring down evil man. So what do you believe? Asked by The Szj - Thu Oct 15 08:15:49 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments Is troop withdrawal from iraq a specific foreign policy? Q. I am writing a research paper for my government class in college. I chose Foreign policy as my topic. Is troop withdrawal from Iraq specific enough or can you be even more specific in this topic? Thanks. Asked by Ky M - Mon Oct 12 18:03:18 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Sounds like the right scope for a paper. Lots of angles -- Does a timetable help the insurgents (right winger position, which never made sense to me)? Does a timetable force the Iraqis to get their act together? Answered by Reality has a Liberal Bias - Mon Oct 12 18:08:37 2009 How would the situation be different had we not gone to Iraq?
Q. Let's turn the situation around a second. Had we not gone to Iraq and accomplished (maybe not 100% obviously) what has been done, what would the situation be like today? Would we have regretted then another terrorist attack? What situation would the people of Iraq be going through now under Sadaam's rule? Asked by NONAME - Fri May 9 12:58:44 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. In all likelihood we would have been attacked on our soil or another military branch would have taken casualties overseas (like when the Navy vessel was attacked). This is only speculation though because we are in Iraq. Vet-USAF / Soon to be boots on ground in Iraq as civilian contractor.
