The terms affirmative action and positive action refer to policies that take race, ethnicity, or gender into consideration in an attempt to promote equal opportunity or increase ethnic or other forms of diversity. The focus of such policies ranges from employment and education to public contracting and health programs. The impetus towards affirmative action is twofold: to maximize diversity in all levels of society, along with its presumed benefits, and to redress perceived disadvantages due to overt, institutional, or involuntary discrimination. Opponents argue that it promotes reverse discrimination.

How to answer this question about affirmative action during a firefighter interview?
Q. I have an interview for a firefighter position. What is the best way to answer this question during the interview: What are your thoughts and opinions on affirmative action? Are you for or against affirmative action?

A. I would say affirmative action, although created for a good reason, has been a failure. Affirmative action breeds racism instead of correcting it. Affirmative action has become a racist act against honest, hard working white men between the ages of 18 and 65. The most qualified candidate for a job should get the job regardless of their race or gender.

A. I suggest you research the goals of Affirmative Action. What was is supposed to accomplish when it was established? Have those goals been met? If so, then you would make that the basis for your argument.

Why do some colleges provide affirmative action for white women and they make up most of students in colleges?
Q. I could understand affirmative action for blacks and hispanics who make up more than 25% of the population but who makes up only 15% of the college system. They are the real minority. However when you look at it it seems that white and women who are white especially make up most of the us college system. So why is it that there is still a move to get more and not the same for blacks or males who are underrepresented?

A. Not sure what state you're in, but in California we no longer have affirmitive action. On most of the major UC campuses, the majority (~40%) of students are Asian.
