The terms affirmative action and positive action refer to policies that take race, ethnicity, or gender into consideration in an attempt to promote equal opportunity or increase ethnic or other forms of diversity. The focus of such policies ranges from employment and education to public contracting and health programs. The impetus towards affirmative action is twofold: to maximize diversity in all levels of society, along with its presumed benefits, and to redress perceived disadvantages due to overt, institutional, or involuntary discrimination. Opponents argue that it promotes reverse discrimination. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by MSAD - Tue Mar 4 21:51:22 2008 Why do some colleges provide affirmative action for white women and they make up most of students in colleges?
Q. I could understand affirmative action for blacks and hispanics who make up more than 25% of the population but who makes up only 15% of the college system. They are the real minority. However when you look at it it seems that white and women who are white especially make up most of the us college system. So why is it that there is still a move to get more and not the same for blacks or males who are underrepresented? Asked by Stevens - Sun Oct 28 11:48:28 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Not sure what state you're in, but in California we no longer have affirmitive action. On most of the major UC campuses, the majority (~40%) of students are Asian.
