Education is a Human right...but how do we enforce?
Q. Education is listed (article 26 of the Universal Dec. of Human Rights) as a Human right, however, my question is how can we enforce this right? How can we make countries spend more on education? How can we make the quality of education better as well? Any and all suggestions would be great. Thank you.

A. First of all, making countries spend more on education is not necessarily a good thing. Public entities spend billions on education in the US and yet the quality of public education has not improved (in fact, most would say it has declined substantially over the past 20 - 30 years). We can improve the quality of education in the US by returning control to a local level versus federal and state. Parents and teachers need more of a voice into curriculum-related and other decisions made within each school district. Vouchers will also help improve quality as free market forces help to drive innovation, quality and efficiency. The more choice parents have in educational options for their children, the better. Each child is unique in… [cont.]

A. who would pay for all this free government institutionalized programs? would they be insuring proper education and health care or something sub average? would that mean the doctors, teachers and professors would give your child a proper health care and education for no cost? Would we be depending all on the government? i think if you gave in to such promises they would then think they could control you if not you your children who they are educating.

Prisons a violation of human rights....basic human rights?
Q. Does anyone think that prisons are a violation of every single human right even the most basic the right to life freedom from torture and degrading treatment freedom from slavery and forced labour the right to liberty the right to a fair trial the right not to be punished for something that wasn't a crime when you did it the right to respect for private and family life freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and freedom to express your beliefs freedom of expression freedom of assembly and association the right to marry and to start a family the right not to be discriminated against in respect of these rights and freedoms the right to peaceful enjoyment of your property the right to an education the right to participate… [cont.]

A. Look at the list of rights you mention. Right to a fair trial. Right to not be punished for something which was lawful when you did it. Don't these suggest therefore that the state has a right to investigate crimes fairly, and punish criminals? Does it suggest that the state has a right to punish someone for something which WAS a criminal offence at the time they did it? The Human Rights Act 1998 and the European Convention says it is okay for the state to investigate crimes. It also says that there is a right to liberty "except where a person is lawfully detained" and there is a right to life except in the case of a lawfully sanctioned death penalty (though all countries in the Council of Europe and in the EU have abolished it).
