Amnesty International (commonly known as Amnesty and AI) is an international non-governmental organisation. Its stated mission is "to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated." Founded in London in 1961, AI draws attention to human rights abuses and campaigns for compliance with international laws and standards. It works to mobilise public opinion to exert pressure on governments that perpetrate abuses. The organisation was awarded the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize for its "campaign against torture", and the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights in 1978. In the field of international human rights organisations (of which there were 300 in 1996), Amnesty has the longest history and broadest name recognition, and "is believed by many to set standards for the movement as a whole." Q. I want to be the guy who goes to other countries where that has been an infringement of human rights and investigate the situation (for example children working in factories where there is no health and safety in for example India, bangladesh). Is that what a Diplomat does? And if so, what requirements do you need to be one? Do you need to know other languages ? Thanks in advance for anyone that helps XD Asked by MANUTD RULES - Thu Dec 17 08:50:55 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Diplomats usually represent governments and certain international organizations which are recognized by treaty, such as the United Nations and the Red Cross/Crescent. They deal with the diplomats of other countries and do not investigate factories. Employees of officious intermeddlers, such as Amenesty International, are not diplomats and do not have diplomatic immunity. For information on working for this group, see its website. The more languages you know, the better. Despite the danger and difficult working conditions, there is much competition for jobs with this group in the event that the language requirement for the position is not too unusual.
