Sweatshop (sweat factory) is a working environment considered to be unacceptably difficult or dangerous — particularly by industrialized nations with high standards of living. However sweatshops may exist in any country. Sweatshop workers often work long hours for unusually low pay, regardless of laws mandating overtime pay or a minimum wage. Child labour laws may be violated. Sweatshops may have hazardous materials and situations. Employees may be subject to employer abuse without an easy way to protect themselves. Since wages are unusually low, and working conditions poor, the incentive for owners to invest in modern, possibly economically nonviable technology is less. Defenders of sweatshops, such as Paul Krugman, Nicholas Kristof, and Johan Norberg focus on the short term advantage to individuals, and the long term advantage to developing countries. The U.S. General Accounting Office defines a sweatshop as an employer that violates more than one federal or state labor law governing minimum wage and overtime, child labor, industrial homework, occupational safety and health, worker’s compensation or industry regulation. Sweatshops exist both internationally and domestically and the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that over 50% of sewing shops in the US are sweatshops as defined by the above definition. From Google News Search: "Sweatshops" How Can I Help STOP DISNEY SWEATSHOPS? Q. Ever since I was little, I was in love with Disney. All their wonderful movies. But now that I've discovered the several sweatshops they have in Bangladesh, China, Vietnam, etc. I'm not really quite sure how I feel. There's plenty of information on the harsh, violent conditions the workers of these sweatshops work in; and the extremely little amount they are paid weekly, usually a few months late (tends to be about 5.80 a week). I want to put an END to this, so that we can go back to loving Disney, and not worry about the many young and mostly women starving and working days on end in sweatshops. But how? Does anyone know any sort of organization working to stop this? Asked by trainunderwater - Sun May 6 00:37:21 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I assume you own no disney products, no disney movies, don't use disney tv stations, and don't visit fast food stores when they have disney promotions. The sad fact is unless you are wearing the rare brand of clothing, you are supporting sweatshops by other manufactures (nike, express, old navy, gap, BR, etc) Disney uses no more or less sweatshops than any other company in those regions. Google "stop sweatshops" and you will find many sources. Your best bet is to start a blog, get about 10,000 regular readers, hire a PR firm, then market to other bloggers in the space, sponser a "boycott disney" program, get advertisers to stop sponsering disney tv stations, and send press releases to all the major media outlets. I read a magazine article a few years about written by a man who wanted to open a small factory in Central America to make clothing. He went to USAID, the US Agency for International Development. They gave him a lot of help in finding a site, finding loans to build buildings, etc. They also instructed him in who to hire. They said most American companies that relocate down there hire teenaged girls, even though their parents are also unemployed. This is because these girls are more docile, easier to intimidate. They (USAID) kept lists of girls who had been troublesome in previous jobs or were blacklisted because they spoke of organizing a union. They also provided him with the names of local officials to bribe, and how to… [cont.] Answered by It's That Guy - Tue Feb 19 19:41:27 2008 Does Primark use sweatshops to make their clothes?
