Freedom of speech is the freedom to speak without censorship and/or limitation. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes used to indicate not only freedom of verbal speech but any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used. In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country and the right is commonly subject to limitations, such as on "hate speech".

The right to freedom of speech is recognized as a human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). The ICCPR recognizes the right to freedom of speech as "the right to hold opinions without interference. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression". Furthermore freedom of speech is recognized in European, inter-American and African regional human rights law.

It is different from and not to be confused with the concept of freedom of thought.

How do we work towards destroying discrimination within the framework of freedom of speech?
Q. What would be an effective way to exterminate racism, sexism, and ethnic discrimination in an environment which allows and encourages freedom of speech? Serious answers only, please.

A. well if you want a dictatorship instead of democracy you have people not just being racist and sexist but you have anarchists too. no matter what form of government we have...people will always complain and people will always hate. to relate human nature to our government seems kinda ...eh. if you want to exterminate those things and include the government that's so freedom of speech...you'd have to get government funding laws to programs or divisions that encourage such things like desegrigation efforts... in other words the government would give tax breaks to programs that advertise anti racism and sexism on tv...or if a company had a rally once a year about recognizing the people around us for their heritige and accepting eachother… [cont.]

Should the freedom of speech be allowed to everybody?

A. There are limitations on free speech, such as yelling fire in a movie theatre or threatening someone else's freedoms, or creating an imminent threat or disrupting the peace. Also, even legal free speech cannot protect you from any of these: 1) Legal contracts with restraining orders 2) Violating rules of conduct in a public or private institution (ie talking loudly in an examination testroom or while a college professor is lecturing a course that other students paid money for. They have the right to make you leave. 3) Your free speech cannot defend you against getting fired from a job, suspended from a school, removed from an orchestral concert. It will, however, protect you from going to jail on the basis of exercising free speech. … [cont.]

Freedom of speech and copyright protection contradict each other?
Q. Why should a copyright holder have such power over when his or her words are used by another? What is the big deal over copyright? Is it really fair in light of our Freedom of Speech?

A. freedom of speech was intended to be on the personal front. the idea was that a person could not be put in jail for merely expressing an opinion. it was also ment so that ideas could be freeflowing. when you are talking about copyrighted material you still have the right in most cases to use it yourself, just not profit from it. copyright laws protect ideas, or a product. when you write a book copyright laws protect you from having someone grabbing a copy, taking it to the publisher and producing it and selling it as his own. it is amazing that the whole freedom of speech idea is so hard for people to get. freedom of speech does not mean you can say whatever you want, whenever you want, to anyone you want. everything has practical… [cont.]
