Academic freedom is the belief that the freedom of inquiry by students and faculty members is essential to the mission of the academy, and that scholars should have freedom to teach or communicate ideas or facts (including those that are inconvenient to external political groups or to authorities) without being targeted for repression, job loss, or imprisonment.

Still, academic freedom has limits. In the United States, for example, according to the widely recognized "1940 Statement on Academic Freedom and Tenure", teachers should be careful to avoid controversial matter that is unrelated to the subject. When they speak or write in public, they are free to express their opinions without fear from institutional censorship or discipline, but they should show restraint and clearly indicate that they are not speaking for their institution. Academic tenure protects academic freedom by ensuring that teachers can be fired only for causes such as gross professional incompetence or behavior that evokes condemnation from the academic community itself.

"Thought police in the lecture hall" certain views cannot be discussed. Is this academic freedom?
Q. US would stop giving federal funds to colleges and universities which violated the rules. Should this be the law?

A. I'm glad you exposed this issue. No,the FEDS know students and faculty are smart enough to form their own opinions, they just want to stop people from voicing them. The only way to fight it is to speak ...speak loudly and often. We have learned from the past that silence doesn't work.

college campus freedom ???
Q. What is college campus freedom if you are a high schooler in a middle college? I am have this essay question "How to balance college campus freedom with the academic resposbility?" and I am not quite grasping the concept of a high schooler with college campus freedoms. From how it was explained to me... College capus freedom was not having you parents around or people to guide me. So can someone help me understand this a bit better? I dont understand how a high school has college campus freedom. two more things.. I am sorry if this is in the wrong section and a middle college is a privite high school where the high schooler is allow to take one to two college classes.

A. If it doesn't simply meaning having parents around and curfews, and people to "guide" you, then it could mean that in college, you pick your own schedule of classes. Each semester/quarter, you take as few as three (for full time) and as many as five courses--they can meet all on Tuesdays and Thursdays or meet everyday for a couple of hours. Most of your time in college is spent out of class--and you are expected to spend several hours a day reading, studying, etc. (hence the academic responsibility). Instead of having daily homework assignments to make sure you are keeping up with your reading, college students get a syllabus on the first day with all the readings for the course, and a suggestion of when they should be read by--but… [cont.]

Anyone from Turkey ? Have you noticed how little you can say freely?
Q. I have tried to register with Turkish forums and News papers and they don't let me in and I live here. They say they are a free country but this a not freedom. If your an academic ok but not the common guy.

A. I live in Turkey too and can't say I've noticed any problems of that nature but I haven't tried to join any purely Turkish/Turkish language fora. What do you mean the papers don't let you in? To write a comment or what? There are definitely limitations on free speech viz Orhan Pamuk, Elif afak etc and we know we can't say a word against THAT MAN. Generally I don't feel that my way of life is restricted in any way, I can speak freely with my Turkish friends and that's the most important thing.
